Research, engineering and technology development
We develop technological solutions to industrial and scientific challenges, using materials science and engineering to connect application requirements with material properties and device performance. Depending on the problem, the deliverable may be a functional material, an engineered component, a device or an advanced process. Our three departments combine experimental development, characterisation and modelling to deliver the agreed outcome.

Energy Storage Materials and Devices

Active materials, electrodes and interfaces; prototype preparation and electrochemical performance characterisation.

Quantum Materials and Technologies

Functional semiconductor and spin systems, photonics, device characterisation and cryogenic electronics.

Advanced Materials

Composition, structure and form: synthesis and process development for 2D materials, oxides and functional material systems.
How we support your development
01 / DESIGN & MANUFACTURING
Material engineering, nano/microfabrication and device development
We select development routes according to material chemistry, target properties, component geometry and function. These can include thin-film deposition, solid-state synthesis, sol–gel processing, powder processing and sintering, and additive manufacturing including 3D printing. Nano- and microfabrication connect material engineering with component and device development.
Doping, solid-solution formation, interfaces and microstructure are engineering choices within that process—not interchangeable production methods.
02 / CHARACTERISATION
Understand performance and resolve defects
In-depth structural, chemical, morphological and functional characterisation helps us analyse materials, components and devices, identify structural or functional defects and develop corrective strategies.
The measurement plan is defined for each project, using the appropriate methods accessible to our team and research collaborators.
03 / MODELLING
Numerical insight alongside experiments
Numerical modelling specialists work alongside the experimental group to interpret measurements, evaluate material and device architectures, and guide experiments and design changes.
04 / LABORATORY & PILOT ENGINEERING
Build the environment for development
Our scope extends from the design and equipping of R&D laboratories to pilot production-line design and equipment integration. We define workflows, process sequences, equipment specifications and commissioning plans around the application.
We support development from laboratory and pilot-plant trials to the design and development of production lines for industrial scale-up. The scope and deliverables are agreed for each project.
Define the challenge. Develop the solution.
Tell us the technological barrier, the intended application and the performance you need. We assess the materials and engineering questions involved, agree a development scope and deliverables, and assemble the expertise needed to address them. Alongside client projects, we initiate technology programmes developed through internal funding and co-investment.
